Kitchen display system
Digital ticket rails per kitchen station — orders route themselves, scheduled orders fire at the right time, and a bump updates everyone.
Updated 2 August 2026
What it is
The kitchen display system (KDS) replaces paper dockets with digital ticket rails. Each kitchen station runs its own screen; orders route to the right station automatically; and when a cook bumps a ticket, the waiter station, the orders board and the guest's order tracker all update within seconds.
What problem it solves
Paper dockets get lost, smudged and mis-ordered — and in a venue with more than one kitchen, someone has to walk the docket to the right section. The KDS removes both problems: nothing is ever lost, and routing is automatic, so a multi-kitchen venue splits every order across its stations without anyone thinking about it.
How it works
-
A cook opens the station picker on any screen and chooses their station. Each card shows the station's live ticket count and flags a station marked over capacity.
-
Orders arrive and each item routes to its station automatically: the menu it belongs to knows its kitchen, category-level routing rules can override, and a fallback station guarantees no order is ever dropped — even a brand-new venue with no stations configured gets one provisioned on the spot.
-
Cooks work the ticket rail in real time: claim a ticket so two chefs never double-cook it, start it, bump it when it is up, or recall it. A whole order can be completed in one tap. Tickets carry allergy flags and can link straight to the recipe.
-
Scheduled orders fire themselves. An order due later stays hidden until its prep window opens — the ticket appears exactly prep-time before it is due, based on each item's own prep time.
-
Every bump rolls up: the parent order's status recomputes from its tickets, the waiter's ready rail and the orders board react immediately, and the guest's live tracker reflects it within seconds. Ticket ageing is colour-coded against each station's own wait thresholds.
-
If the network turns hostile, the board degrades gracefully — realtime updates fall back to polling and the rail keeps working.
Everything inside the system
- Unlimited stations, including expeditor stations, each with its own rail and wait thresholds.
- Automatic multi-kitchen routing with category rules and a guaranteed fallback.
- Claim, start, bump, recall and whole-order completion with full timestamps.
- Prep-time driven firing for scheduled orders.
- Allergy flags and recipe links on tickets, audio alerts, over-capacity markers.
- Live roll-up to the orders board, waiter station and guest tracker.
This is built into NexDine — there is no separate KDS product to buy or license per screen. Any tablet or screen with a browser becomes a station. If you take delivery-marketplace orders through an optional Deliverect connection, ticket progress is reported back to the marketplace automatically.
